STAND UP FOR LOVE
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield and Jim Vallance)

Here I go again
Up against the wall
But if I don't give it everything I got baby,
It'll come to nothing at all

I give it one more chance
Before I fade to black
I'm fighting for my life yeah I'm scared
But you know that I can never look back

You say I can't refuse
I've got nothing left to lose
But if you're asking me to choose
I'm gonna Stand Up (stand up) For Love
(for love)

Baby once I'm in, you know I play to win
I Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
Cause it's all that I can do

I Stand Up For Love

When I cut you down
Bet it hurt so bad
It can break your faith
And your soul like you're living in a world gone mad

When it comes back around
Rip your heart
Break down
You gotta hold your ground
Babe, you gotta
Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)

It's a chance I take
It's never too late
Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
It's the best that I can do
You gotta Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
Cause baby once you're in, you gotta play to win it
Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
Baby I'll be good to you

I think of the times when things were better babe
I'm missing them, missing them
I never thought they would end

You know I can't refuse
I got nothing left to lose
If you're asking me to choose
I'm gonna Stand Up (stand upP For Love (for love)
It's a chance I'll take
It's never too late
Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
It's the best that I can do
You gotta Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
Cause baby once you're in
You've gotta play to win
Stand Up (stand up) For Love (for love)
Baby I'll be good to you

Song Facts: - This song does not appear on any albums.

Rick Springfield spent January and February 1990 in Vancouver shooting the cable TV movie "Dead Reckoning". Whenever he was able to get away from the film set he'd come to my recording studio. In the small amount of time available we managed to complete three songs: Rhythm of Love, Stand Up For Love, and The White Room - Jim Vallance on jimvallance.com

This is a great jamming song! I loved it from the first few guitar licks. I can not imagine (as with so many of Rick's unreleased songs) why this one didn't make an "album." I also think this song hints on Bryan Adams, not so much for how his voice sounds, but in the music itself. It also reminds me of a song by Loverboy, from the late 80's called "Can't Get Much Better." Don't ask me why though! Maybe it's in the guitar riffs, I'm not too sure, but that is what came to mind for me. But regardless of what it resembled when I first heard it, I feel this is a really strong song by Rick, and it's growing on me rapidly. Now I am just hearing Rick through the whole song.

I love how the song starts out with just the guitar & cymbals & then kicks off into more guitar. I like how in the guitar break, right after he says "end" it sounds like a car revving. Now THAT is cool! This song seems very upbeat & positive to me. It's like a song of hope & faith, and then on the other hand, it's rather sad…about a relationship that's in trouble. But he is saying that he will fight for the love…."baby once I'm in, you know I play to win. I stand up (stand up) for love (for love) cause it's all that I can do." That's our Rick! I really like the second verse where he says, "I give it one more chance before I fade to black. I'm fighting for my life, yeah I'm scared. But you know that I can never look back." I like the fade to black part and how he admits he is scared of losing her. I gotta say, I LOVE how he says "scared." He cannot seem to keep that Aussie accent in check with that word! LOL…Too cute! (reminded me of how he says "scared" in the movie Dead Reckoning).

"Cause baby once you're in, you gotta play to win." Now that is a strong line! Yes, with anything we do, whether it be a relationship, work, family, friends, or whatever…that's an important message. We should always play to win. Rick has certainly done that with his life, I think. He is a great role model for struggling musicians, (and even those of us who are NOT musicians) because he kept fighting to win, and stood strong through it all, despite the critics & haters. Another positive line: "It's a chance I take, it's never too late." So very true! We have to take chances in life, or we'll never know what we might be missing out on. - Kelley Pearson

The second this song started to play, the first thing that popped into my head was "Bryan Adams". This song SCREAMS Bryan Adams at me. The guitar, the lyrics, everything!! Really, I don't think that is a bad thing, though. Ok, now that I have gotten that out of the way…..I love it !! For the life of me I cannot understand why this song was not put on a CD if not released for radio play. I am not sure which CD I think it would go on. However, this could definitely have been a hit in my book.

After listening to it a few times it stayed stuck in my head for quite a long time and it just puts me in a good mood. It seems like what he is trying to put across on this one is that love is the winner no matter what else happens in his situation. "you know that I can never look back"/ "I've got nothing left to lose, but if you're asking me to choose, I'm gonna stand up (stand up) for love" . It's funny how I like the way he says certain words in this song. OH, and I also swear I can hear a telephone ringing in the background at one point…LOL I got up to answer my phone the first time I listened to it. Very catchy lyrics, the music just stays in my head and I enjoy it completely! -  Amy L
