SOMEWHERE
(Words and Music by Jeff Silverman and
Watson, Additional Words by Rick Springfield and Mark Spiro)
Tonite you cried out I heard you call
From the child inside your soul
An SOS heaven help the sender
And tonite I wish we weren't so far apart
Because the beating of this heart is telling you
You can't surrender
I know it's hard for you
You know it's hard for me
If you can keep believing there's a place
I know someday we'll be
Somewhere in the silent morning
Somewhere out beyond the sea of blue
There's a dream that's calling
Somewhere there's a place for me and you
Woe - Oh
Me and you
So near, I watch the city o' lights go out
And I know without a doubt that
You and I tonite somehow have spoken
And here, across the miles so far away
I cross my heart and pray
That a promise made will not be broken
The words are in my head
But they're hard for me to say
Sometimes alone the power
Of what I feel can take my breath away
Somewhere in the silent morning
Somewhere out beyond the sea of blue
There's a dream that's calling
Somewhere there's a place for me and you
Woe - Oh
Me and you
And if the wait's too long there
Let your heart be strong there
And may the love reign over you
Somewhere in the silent morning
Somewhere out beyond the sea of blue
There's a dream that's calling
Somewhere there's a place for me and you
Woe - Oh
Me and you
Somewhere in the silent morning
Somewhere out beyond the sea of blue
There's a dream that's calling
Somewhere there's a place for me and you
Woe - Oh
Me and you
Somewhere in the silent morning
Somewhere out beyond the sea of blue
There's a dream that's calling...

According to US
This is a "sigh" song for me. What I mean is, when I listen to it my heart weeps out this little sigh that only emits when Rick Springfield and/or his music is near. From the first line,
"Tonite you cried out and I heard you call" I'm gone...I'm such a sucker for sap and this song is oozing the syrup. He's singing that even though they are apart, he knows she needs him and someday they'll be together again. Sigh...there it goes again. Flutter, flutter. :-)
Other than this song hitting me in my soft spot there's not much new to the lyrics, and the tune sounds a lot to me like "I Need You" although I don't know why. So I'm sitting here wondering why I like this song so much so that I can formulate that into some words. I realize though that it's not really necessary to explain why you like things sometimes, sometimes just saying "I just do" is good enough. Well, at least I hope it is for this one. My favorite part is the glaringly obvious stanza that Rick wrote,
"The words are in my head but they're hard for me to say, sometimes alone the power of what I feel can take my breath
away". The way Rick emotes these lines makes me shudder.
The one other thing that I want to express on this song is that it sounds like it could either be the starting theme to some television show or belongs in a movie scene. I don't know if that means it sounds generic or exactly what my point is on that one, but every time I listen to it I get this feeling that it belongs somewhere <haha> but maybe not necessarily on this album. Possibly it's just it's position on the album-but it seems out of place here. Maybe it's my association with "I Need You" that makes me think this belongs in a movie, but whatever it is has me looking for it when I'm watching some obscure chick flick.

I have to admit that I am really surprised that there are some of us who don't like this song. But actually impressed by that as well because there are some Rick ballads I don't care for that I hear everyone else loves (State of the Heart is one) that I always feel like such a traitor when I dislike something most people I know like.
However, that is not the case with Somewhere. I've always liked this song a lot. In fact I was surprised that Rick wasn't really much of a driving force in the creation of this song, that he just added some touches here and there to the wording of it. I really enjoyed this song a lot when my husband was doing the commute thing between our home in Detroit and his work that year in San Diego (WHY didn't we take THAT job???).
Anyway, it's a simple ballad but I"ve always taken it at face value: a separation across the miles of two people who care about each other and hope for the best despite the issues that that separation brings. It's not deep, it's not fancy, but there's something so ethereal about the quality of the music that I love. It is, however, a poor fit for the rest of this CD, with their overtly sexual overtones and innuendo. I would be very curious to find out how it ended up here...but I for one am glad it did. :)

This song reminds me a lot of I Need You. It sounds like a song that
would fit in a movie, and to me, it also sounds like something Rick was
singing but had not written (although I know in I Need You he didn't write
it and this one he did have a hand in). It just doesn't feel like a Rick
Springfield song to me. It's just a little more mushy and happy than the
stuff he would usually write.
Having said that, it's a beautiful song, and Rick's voice is just
beautiful singing it.
My favorite line in the song is:
The words are in my head
But they're hard for me to say
It's so true. I know I've been in situations (on at least one occasion
with Rick standing in front of me, no less), where I knew exactly how I
felt and what I wanted to say, and he words just kind of get stuck.
I've listened to this song several times this week, out of team
spirit. i've tried, i really have, because i've met many wonderful people
who love "somewhere". personally, i have just two words for this
song:
bathroom break.
Honestly, in all fairness, it takes a very special ballad to catch my ear.
this one, quite frankly, ain't got what it takes.
there is an oboe in the song. that's a plus.
Somewhere beyond the sea of blue? is he still in australia? is he in the
US thinking of someone in australia? is he in a disney movie? urgh.
Somewhere in a silent morning? is he thinking of death, wishing to be w/
his dad again?
I watch the city lights go OUT, and I know without a DOUBTTTTTT (note he
puts LOTS of emphasis on that last t, just in case we didn't quite catch
the rhyme)..... :-P
I'm assuming Watson is someone's pet. or the guy passing out the large
doses of valium needed to pace this song.
there is one line in here that is worth noting, maybe it was rick's
donation: sometimes alone the power of what i feel is enough to take my
breath away.
the final blow is "woe oh" as a lyric. in a similar vein,
"hey, wooo" from rol was enough to kill that song for me for
almost 2 decades. - sgeorge
