God Blinked
(Swing it Sister)
(Rick Springfield/Matt Bissonette)
OH!
Yea, yea, yea yea
(swing it sister, swing it sister)
Her little soft machine could break your heart
We were linked
She was dancing from the second she checked and she's a work of art
But God blinked
Come on won't you swing it sister - whoa
You know you're always on my mind
Come On
Come on and swing it sister, swing it sister, swing it sister
You left so many behind
Owww!
She was the Mona Lisa's daughter
and somehow I caught her eye
And she winked
She was smart as she was vocal
A real social butterfly
But God blinked
(Come on swing it sister, Come on)
Come on won't you swing it sister
You know you're always on my mind
come on and swing it sister,
(swing it sister, swing it sister
Babe you left me broken and blind
You knew just what you wanted
your pretty smile it haunted me, taunted me
We had the long goodbye
I had to stop and cry
I know you're happy baby where you're at
owww!
Come on won't you swing it sister
You know you're always on my mind (on my mind)
Come on and swing it sister
swing it sister, swing it sister
You left so many behind
Come on won’t you swing it sister
Come on and swing it sister
You know your always on my my my my mind
Come on and swing it sister
swing it sister, swing it sister
Babe you left me broken and blind
(Whoa!)
Hey Ma take a look at me now (me now)
woo hoo, woo hoo
(I say)
Hey Ma take a look at me now (yea, yea)
woo hoo, woo hoo
(I said)
hey Ma take a look at me now (yea, yea)
woo hoo, (yea, yea)woo hoo....
(I say)
Hey Ma take a look at me now
woo hoo, woo hoo
(I say)
Hey Ma take a look at me now
Owwwwww!

Rick Says: God Blinked is a song principally
about loosing Sahara. Spectacular, spectacular person. When
she died, her Mom actually said to me if you write a song don't make it a morbid
song. So I wanted something she could dance to. - Amazon.com promo video.

According to US
Hmmm. I’m not sure how to start out this review. This is an “odd” song for me in several ways. Not to say I don’t like the sound. The sound is good and Rick’s voice is just amazing, but it’s not in my top favorite tracks from VIO. But first, in the song’s defense, I will say that it has a groovy dance-type sound and I find that I can’t help but sing along and tap my feet to it.
The confusion began for me when I watched my bonus footage from the CD and Rick said this was a song about Sahara. At this point I had listened to the song many times in my car before viewing the footage online. I seriously thought he had messed up in the interview and actually meant a different song when he said that. LOL The lyrics really threw me! It sounded to me like he and Matt were talking about a knock-out beautiful woman, the type of woman who is almost “untouchable” or one you’re better off not to be involved with. The type who might break your heart---“Her little soft machine could break your heart. We were linked. She was dancing from the second she checked in, she’s a work of art. But God blinked.” Ok, so my mind went immediately to a visual of a woman with a nice body (“machine?” They were mesmerized by her beauty?). Then “checked in” came across to me as either literally checking into a hotel OR meaning from the day she “checked into” life, like saying even at birth she was stunning and vivacious. “Linked” I took as an attraction, a chemistry, or maybe because they both had a love for music?
Then there’s the chorus…“Swing it sister, swing it sister. You left so many behind.” I took this to mean that she’s had a lot of relationships and possibly left a trail of broken hearts along the way. (And by the way, Rick’s voice is amazingly sexy and also a bit ‘unusual’ for him in this song. A different singing style perhaps? He did some really cool things with his voice in this one!)
Next verse---“She was a Mona Lisa daughter and somehow I caught her eye. And she winked.” I took this again to mean, she was stunningly beautiful…like say, the Mona Lisa or her offspring. And then there’s the funny “SOMEHOW” he caught her eye?!! Gee Rick, I wonder how?! Rick has a knack for catching a lot of eyes, and he doesn’t even have to try. ;-)
I’m not quite sure what the “God blinked” really means, as it’s an expression I’m not familiar with. Maybe that’s why I didn’t catch who he wrote the song for/about. Does it mean that someone passed away too soon, before their time?
Back to the ‘misleading lyrics’ (which I suppose also makes this song universal)---“Your pretty smile it haunted me, taunted me. We had the long goodbye, I had to stop and cry. I know you’re happy baby where you’re at.” Ok, so this led me to think it’s about hooking up with said woman after all…but it didn’t last, as he probably expected it wouldn’t. But he was saddened by their goodbye’s anyway and he figures she is happy not being in a relationship. (“where you’re at”) Yet he’s “haunted” by her smile and charm.
When I first heard this song, it had a bit of a southern rock feel to me…but as I’ve listened to it more, I’m not too sure about that. It’s interesting to say the least!!! Not what I would expect to hear at all. And is that horns or possibly a sax I hear?
I had to really “dig” to find the Sahara aspect of this song…even with the “Hey ma take a look at me now” lyrics at the end of the song. I really didn’t take it that way at all, but since I know the reason for the song, right from the horse’s mouth so to speak, I can kind of see it…sometimes. I can definitely imagine her loving this song and dancing around to it! Didn’t Rick say he wrote it “for” her as a song she would love to dance to? It’s definitely one of the best dancing songs on the CD.
