She
(Rick Springfield/Matt Bissonette)
(clapping)
She, she is a healer
And she gives me sight
She's the show
She comes home and knows love has arrived
Don't you know that she's out there, somewhere
Picking me up, from this big black hole
What does she see in me?
I can't believe she is real
Fixing me up, for this big gray world
Spiritual bandages placed on a wound that will heal
Takes away all of my vanity
cleans up my sanity
Makes me the man I should be, oh
She, she is a healer
She gives me sight
And I know, she is so warm and alive
(Beautiful to me)
She is a feeler, and I feel alright
She's the show, she comes home
and knows love has arrived
Found out today, I have found my gold
When all of the scenery fades like a picture of old
burns away all the calamity
all the humanity,
turns on the man I should be, Oh
She is a healer she gives me sight
And I know, she is so warm and alive
(she is so beautiful to me)
She is a feeler, and I feel alright
She's the show, she comes home and knows love has arrived
Hey, she, oh, she, she, she
She is a feeler, and I feel alright
She's the show, she comes home and knows love has arrived.
Don't you know that she's out there, somewhere
Carried away, to a big dark sleep
My head hits the pillow, I'm praying that she is for real.

Rick says: She is a love song. Its a love song
to people we love the most. And feeling secure and strong and warm in a
relationship is basically what it's about. - Amazon.com promo video.

I absolutely hate the corny circus music and clapping at the beginning of
this song. I have no clue why that was put into this particular song, but I
could do without it and its enough for me to almost be turned off from it, but
once it gets going, I am liking it.
I think the music and Rick’s voice and the background vocals all mix
together wonderfully to make a very beautiful song.
The lyrics are somewhat intense and easy to catch. I find it so amazing
how he uses words in his songs that are in no way used on a daily basis and then
puts them together to rhyme and make an awesome song. I really like and enjoy it
immensely. - Amy L

According to US
Once again, Rick has come up with another beautiful love song to capture my heart, only this time with the help of his bassist Matt Bissonette. When I hear this song I’m pretty sure it’s about Rick’s wife and also Matt’s wife. (I mean, who else would they be referring to?!) But it’s written with that universal voice once again, even though it feels really personal. (“Don’t you know that she’s out there, somewhere.”)
It is quite obvious, even to the casual listener (say a casual Rick fan), that Rick is a huge Beatles fan. It’s undeniable in much of his music, present and past. But this particular song screams with Beatles influence. I knew it even before he talked about each song! The odd circus music and clapping/laughing sound clip at the opening is so “Beatle-ish!” Another area that reminds me of their style is the ending where Rick’s voice sounds like it’s coming out of an old music box or something of that nature. It even has a little “record scratching” sound to close it out. The harmonizing thing in the background of the chorus behind Rick’s vocals have a Beatles “feel” to them as well. Very cool how that sounds! I like the melodies and keyboards in this song and even the background voices singing a bit of “do do do do” before going into “She, she is a feeler, and I feel alright.” I think Rick even accentuated his Aussie accent in this song a bit too…for added effect. ;-) There is really NOTHING I don’t love about this song. “She” switches places from week to week with Venus, 3 Warning Shots and Time Stand Still as my favorite track on VIO. If I’m in a romantic mood that week, “She” gets more play time than the others. It’s just beautiful to me and has a great flow throughout!
I really like the “mixed-up” song structure where the song cranks up into the chorus right away (after the “circus” intro). That adds an interesting vibe, kind of stressing what’s being said in the chorus. “She. She is a healer, and she gives me sight. She’s the show. She comes home and knows love has arrived.” Ok, so maybe the relation (if there is any!) between the odd intro music and the song is because Rick is saying, “She’s the show?” Therefore there is clapping?
This is such a warm, sweet song…a tribute to the women they love, the women who are the center of their lives. Rick has always said that Barbie has been his “savior” through the marriage and through his dark times, so the lyrics make a lot of sense to me coming from him. Although, I still think Rick doesn’t give himself nearly the credit he deserves. It’s obvious he has a big heart and a beautiful soul. But he does struggle with demons as many of us do, and I think he sees his wife as being a “healer” of his sometimes wounded spirit. He is always saying she is the “rock” in their relationship.---“Fixing me up, for this big gray world. Spiritual bandages placed on a wound that will heal.” I love how that verse is phrased. There’s the usual self-doubt coming through in the first part of that verse---“Picking me up, from this big black hole. What does she see in me? I can’t believe this is real.” I could say that it’s kind of sad how Rick doesn’t see what she sees in him, but mostly I can relate to his insecurities. Even after the very long relationship they have had, it’s still amazing to him, unreal. Again, I can relate. I’ve been married for almost 22 years, and often times I stop and appreciate what that means.
I really like the next verse too---“Found out today, I have found my gold. When all of the scenery fades like a picture of old.” I think the “gold” he’s referring to is his connection with his wife and the staying power they have as a couple. The “scenery?” I can’t help but wonder if that may refer to his career, his followers, his travels out on the road playing music…and when eventually, someday, he’s “stripped down” to just himself with all of that behind him. I am probably reading more into it than there is, but that’s what I take from that verse. It’s both nice and sentimental to me, like his way of saying she is a “solid foundation” in his busy, crazy world…a world that would probably drive most wives out of their mind. She must be a strong, loving woman!
I love how Rick really turns on the accent in the last verse, the pronunciation of pillow being especially cute!---“Carried away, to a big dark sleep. My head hits the pillow, I’m praying that she is for real.” Don’t most of us feel this way at times? When we have love, real love, don’t we wonder if it’s just a cruel joke that will soon be snatched away from us?
I would love to hear this song live! Rick’s voice is still amazing and I think he does great with the slower songs in concert. “She” would make for a nice mellow break in between their harder-rocking songs and I think the fans would really appreciate hearing this one. ;-)
