According to US
This episode opens with Mick (Rick) narrating once again. Something about a beautiful day for surfing... the scene then shows Mick walking on the beach apparently just out of the water from doing just that. As Joey is walking up to Mick on the beach, he is asking him where he's been. Joey says, "There's more to life than surfing." Two girls in bikinis walk by, both Mick & Joey pause to watch, and Joey then says, "There's more to life than that too.". Mick yells, "Who are you and what have you done with my brother?" Joey shrugs him off, stating it's still him. Mick says, "You've been drugged then." Joey exasperatedly explains that he wants to get on with his life and shows Mick a letter stating he's been accepted to the Police Academy. Mick tells him, "He won't let you graduate." Joey is confused as to whom Mick is referring to. Mick says,
"Ratchett." Apparently this is the same Police Academy that Mick graduated from. |

During the next training exercise, Joey mouths off to Ratchett and is punished. He has to run holding a battering-ram over his head in the heat. He ends up passing out from heatstroke, rather than apologizing to
Ratchett. Mick then shows up at the academy again to visit Joey in the infirmary. Mick tells Joey that Fritz investigated Bruno (from Texas) and he can't be in on anything with
Ratchett. (for the record, Mick licks his lips twice in this scene - reviewer has to rewind twice to actually comprehend what was going on) Mick also tells Joey that Ratchett's secretary was killed in a car accident last year. Mick then leaves, running into Ratchett again. Ratchett tells him he has no business being there. Mick says, "When you almost kill my brother, it is my business." Ratchett tells him, "You were the best, Number One, now you're a complete waste, a bum surfer!" Then he slaps Mick in the mouth. (reviewer gasps at the blood spurt) Mick then proceeds to flip Ratchett (tight jeans and all) and asks him about his secretary. Ratchett admits that it was suicide, the accident report didn't reflect that to protect her family. Mick then follows the Commander who is leaving the academy. He goes to Bruno's father's house. We find this out when Mick takes the mail out of the mailbox and sees the addressee. (if only it were really that simple) Back at the academy, Joey and Terri (the other female cadet) are going through Miller's things, and discover she was a reporter. Ratchett almost catches them. Joey tries to call Mick, and the phone is busy. Joey mutters, "Man, my bro's having a yak attack." Fritz is then shown informing Mick that Bruno's father recently moved to CA from TX and he financially supports the Police Academy. She also tells Mick that the secretary's car was taken to Reggie's Righteous Recycling. (we never see Mick ask her for this info). Mick goes to the salvage yard, finds the car (again, if it were only that simple) and sees that someone has taken the brakes & brake lines from the vehicle. Reggie tells him he doesn't keep records of who purchased what, but does have a video surveillance that Mick can view. As Joey is going through his final training exercise (boy, that was quick) we see Mick driving back to the Academy. We see the Commander following Joey with a gun. Mick runs onto the course, tackles the Commander. When everyone rushes to them, Mick tells Ratchett and Joey he saw the Commander on the salvage yard tape. The secretary found out the Commander was on the take, so he wanted her dead. Sarah Miller was also investigating the commander, and now she's dead. (good deduction there) After the commercial, Joey is seen saying good-bye to Ratchet, he just misses the beach too much. Ratchett calls him another Barrett quitter. Mick says, "Nah, he's just talking 'bout freedom. That's what's in Barrett blood." Mick & Joey are then seen sitting on the beach, apparently watching someone surf. Mick is eating an apple in a most un-flattering way. The camera pans to where they are looking, and it's Bruno, on the sand laying on a surf board pretending to be in the water. Mick tells Joey the next time he offers someone surfing lessons, he should make sure the guy can swim. Joey says, "Who knew?" I wasn't exactly thrilled with this episode either. When I have to rewind to catch up on plot because I'm noticing in the tight jeans that the character Mick Barrett dresses to the left as well... well you know it wasn't an edge of your seat hour. I give it one wave. - Michelle P. |

| Joey decides he wants to go to the Sheriff's Academy - the same one that Mick went to. Opening scene has Mick in the wet suit. Loved the wet suit, and am grateful to the wardrobe person who went with the shorts instead of the full length pants. The Academy is run by Captain Ratchett. Mick is worried because he and Ratchett had issues and didn't think Joey would get a fair shot. Shortly after arriving, one of the female cadets (Sarah Miller) hangs herself. Joey is suspicious because there is an overweight cadet (Bruno) from Dallas, with one of the worst Texas accents I've ever heard, and doesn't understand how he got past the residency requirements, considering all his weaknesses. Joey also finds out he we rejected by 3 academies prior to being accepted into this one. Mick shows up to do some investigation. Ratchet calls him a putrid stinking maggot. Ouch! We also find out that Mick was #1 in his class while there. Mick suspects that Ratchett might be behind all the suspicious activities. Joey is pretty sure that Sarah didn't hang herself because she couldn't even tie a knot during the tug of war exercise. He thinks that maybe Bruno and Ratchett are in it together. Joey smarts off to Ratchett and Ratchett makes him do an exercise until he passes out from a heat stroke. Mick comes back to investigate further. Ratchett tells him he has no business being there and Mick says "when you almost kill my brother, that makes it my business". Ratchett blames Mick for getting is partner killed, clearly getting to Mick, who seems to feel guilty anyway. He and Ratchett exchange some blows. Mick had found out that Ratchett's secretary was killed in a car wreck the year before, the police had called it an accident, but Mick knew there was no way it had been. Ratchett says it was suicide and the police were trying to protect her family. Mick finds out she didn't have any family. Mick confronts the head of the Academy (Heston) and Mick knows he's lying about Sarah Miller and the secretary. Joey finds Sarah's diary and discovers she's a reporter who was on to Heston letting people buy their way into the academy. Mick finds out that Heston killed the secretary to keep her quiet also. When Heston realizes that Joey is on to him, he tries to kill him too, but Mick saves the day. Joey decides he can't stay away from the beach and quits the academy. I didn't like this episode as much as a lot of them. Mick and Joey were kind of separated and I like it when they are more together because they had such great chemistry. The last scene has Mick eating an apple. Not the most attractive thing I've ever seen. He should stick to something a little less chewy, maybe. I'll give this one two waves. - rlh |

| This was a good episode of High Tide! Joey has decided that he wants to try out for the police academy as his brother Mick once did. I've heard that real police training is pretty brutal, and I thought they portrayed it fairly well here. What a funny laugh-out-loud-line at the beginning when Mick learns what Joey is wanting to do. The guys are walking down the beach (and I might add…I think Rick should make wet suits part of his normal wardrobe!!! MERCY) and Joey tells him there is more to life than just surfing. He then proceeds to point at some women passing by and says to Mick, "and more to life than that too." Mick looks seriously at Joey and says, "ok…who are you and what have you done with my brother!" LOL Mick warns Joey that he will never graduate from the academy because of the hateful Sargeant Ratchet, whom Mick had dealt with many years ago when he was a cadet. But Joey will not be persuaded to back out. He finds after a few days at the academy that it's pretty grueling, and that Ratchet really is as bad or worse than Mick let on. It isn't long before Ratchet learns that Joey is Mick's brother, and in turn makes life in training a living hell for Joey. {I'm thinking that the actor who played Ratchet also played the `dad' in the episode Dead In The Water….but I'm not sure.} While the cadets are training one day, one of the females cadets goes looking for her partner and finds the woman dead. She has hung herself (or someone did it for her!) So the investigation begins. When Mick learns of it…the guys start looking for evidence. They suspect Ratchet may have killed her, but they later find out that Heston…another of the Sargeants has been the one who's up to no good. I like the `heated' little scene between Mick and Ratchet as Mick is about to leave from a visit with Joey. It's appears the two men have it in for each other. Ratchet plans to make an example out of Joey, if for nothing else, because he's Mick's brother. On a side note here: Mick was `doing' some NICE blue jeans in this episode!!! One word about the `shirtless phone call' Mick makes to Gordon and Fritz about Joey's situation----"MERCY!" I couldn't tell you what was said right here. LOL He could walk around all day with his shirt hanging open, and I seriously doubt anyone would argue. One of my favorite lines in this episode is when Joey is talking on the phone to Mick about one of his cadets…Bruno….and he says, "He's a bonafide woman hater. He's got a chip on his shoulder the size of my long board." LOL Mick comes to visit soon after Joey had an attack of heat stroke. He finds him sitting up in bed. Mick is seriously worried, but all Joey can talk about is how the hottest girl in the academy gave him mouth-to-mouth! He even tells Mick that he deserved the punishments Ratchet gave him. Joey decides he better get back out there with the rest of the cadets, rather than laying around in bed all day. |

| I think one of the main reasons I like this episode so much is because it gives a bit of Mick's history as a cop. Mick comes to the work out room where Joey and Ratchet are at. He confronts Ratchet about causing Joey to have a heat stroke. Mick and Ratchet have some words and end up in a fist fight. Ratchet threw the first punch at Mick, and we see Mick with a really bloody mouth. All the while Ratchet keeps referring to Mick as a quitter and a bum. This is where the truth comes out. We learn that the reason Ratchet is so angry towards Mick is because Ratchet felt Mick was the best cop to ever enter the academy under his training. Apparently he didn't hate Mick and all, he admired him. He had a lot of faith in Mick and his skills at the academy. I think it made HIM feel like a failure that he had such a skilled man to shape into a fine cop, and it didn't happen. Mick quit before Ratchet saw the results of his labors. He talks to Mick and Joey about how he put all he had into training Mick and then Mick dropped out. He is upset that he `wasted his time' on Mick. Later, Mick is doing his own investigation with the help of Fritz and her research, while Joey continues to train at the academy. Joey is in the shooting range or obstacle course (I think that's what it's called. One of those rooms with all the wooden `people' on hinges that are set up as targets.) Heston is creeping around in the room and begins shooting at Joey. Of course, luckily for Joey, Mick has pulled up outside in the Caddy and will soon come to his rescue! Doesn't it always happen this way? We're usually not this lucky in `real life' that someone shows up just in the nick of time. Mick charges in and jumps on Heston from behind, retrieving Heston's gun. After a very brief struggle from Heston, Mick leads him outside. Mick calls out Heston in front of everyone including Ratchet. He discusses the evidence he's gathered against him. I thought Hatchet had a good line here. He tells Heston, " The only thing keeping me from tearing you apart limb by limb here and now, is the pleasure of knowing what they do to cops like you in prison. So Heston was in fact the one responsible for the two supposed suicides, and for so many cadets not making it through the academy. Case solved once again! Way to go Mick---and Joey! The ending scene is pretty cute. We see Mick and Joey hanging in their beach loungers munching sandwiches. {Rick is looking mighty tan and mighty fine in this scene, wearing the much-referred-to High Tide get-up…his black and purple wet suit!} They are cheering Bruno on, ("bend the knees!") but at first we don't see him. Joey admits to Mick that the academy was really tough and says, "you either got it or you don't." Mick tells him sincerely, "you gave it a good shot." The guys pick up their boards and head out talking about how it's better to learn surfing from an early age. Oh, and for good measure he had to throw in a few cracks (as he loves to do) to Mick about Mick's age! LOL Joey asks, "do you think Bruno will ever get the hang of it?" Mick smiling: "I don't know." We see Bruno lying on his belly pretending to paddle…in the sand, women surrounding him watching on! As they are about to hit the waves Mick tells Joey, "next time you offer a guy surfing lessons, make sure he can swim." Joey yells, "HEY, who knew!?" This one wasn't as full of witty, funny lines as a lot of the other episodes, but I still enjoyed watching it. It was a bit different in terms of the storyline, which made it interesting. - Kelley Pearson |
