Plot -
Mick has a friend, Malcolm Reid who is a stunt man and is the spokesman for Mr. Power Pop cola.  He asks Mick to come see him, and when Mick does, he watches Malcolm drown while shooting a commercial for the Cola.  Mick is suspicious so he asks Gordon to arrange for him to take Malcolm's place so he can investigate. Mick thinks he will be surfing, but when he shows up for work, he has to shoot a rock climbing scene.  Malcolm's wife suspects that Mick is working for Mr. Power Pop, trying to muscle out her company (she's in charge of filming the commercials).  Mick finds out they are putting addictive substances in the cola in order to increase sales.  Once again, the Barrett brothers save the day.  (oh yea, Joey was there too :-)

Some of the highlights for me:
When Mick is asking Gordon for help, Gordon makes him say "please"

Mick's undercover name is "Crash" Simpson - after shooting the Rock Climbing scene, Malcolm's wife says "you really live up to your name Crash", and Mick says "I'm just glad it's not "splat""  I loved the Rock climbing scene.  I think there was a stunt double, and he had the exact kind of legs that Rick did, they were built very similar.  After he got through filming the commercial,  Joey asked him how he felt, and Mick says "like I got hit by a mountain".

I believe this is where the "age" thing starts between Mick and Joey, and I believe it continues to run until the end of the series.  Rick was about 44 when this was shot, and I think Mick's character is 33 - 35.  I know they say at one point, but I don't remember.

Mick and Joey comb the beach for Mr.  Power Pop cans, trying to gather evidence.  They are looking for the can Malcolm drank out of, not realizing that all the cans were going to come in handy.  There was a "bag" lady also picking up cans and they wanted her cans.  She bargained and she wanted a kiss from Mick.  He went to kiss her on the check, and she turned and kissed him full on the lips.  I loved this scene!  The look on Mick's face was priceless.  She started to walk off and Mick says "hey, my can".....

Joey calls Mick his "older, slower" brother, so Mick chases him and catches him.  He looks great in the jeans he is wearing, and the muscle shirt.

Definitely some beefcake going on here.  They go to search Harlan's office (the director of the commercial, ex-husband of Malcolm's wife), and Mick's shirt is open the whole time.

There was an ad guy there for Mr. Power Pop, who was a real jerk.  Mick has a line "ad guys are So sensitive".  Like the way Rick delivered that one.

Rick escapes out of a car that was fixed for the doors not to open.  They wonder how he got out.  Joey says something about him being Houdini (little did they know:-)

Then at the end, Mick says something about going home and taking a "nice hot bath".  (GLORIA>>>>)

I give this episode 4 waves. - rlh

I agree, the episodes were either starting to get better, or we ARE just so into Rick that we don't see how bad/corny this series was. I really enjoyed this episode too.

This totally cracked me up also. I kept thinking, "smart lady". I mean, c'mon admit it, we'd all love to be brave enough to turn our cheek too...
They also do not explain yet, why Fritz would have expertise on testing the soda cans. She's a female jack of all trades, eh? She should have had her own series...

Did anyone else think Rick looked like Speed Racer with that helmet on? Just checking. I think however, I am having a lot of fun picking out "future" references...such as the Houdini comment. - Michelle P.
I think I have discovered why I am really starting to enjoy this series. Of course Rick makes it easy to want to watch him as Mick, but I love the scenery. I have always had a love affair with the ocean. I also respect it. One day it would be cool to have a home Oceanside where I can stare at it at my leisure, with a little High Tide here and there.

It is too bad that Malcolm was killed off so early in this episode. I thought he displayed some good acting chops, along with many of the other secondary characters. They were much better than ones in the other two episodes that I have watched. 'Killer Wave' was an enjoyable episode to watch!

Joey was great, although I laughed as he walked through the sand in socks and shoes. (I am strange that way with footwear on the beach). He actually runs into the water with them on to help pull out Malcolm. I also giggled at the scene where he takes over the 'lock picking' from Mick. His bold sarcasm left me grinning when he was arguing with the 'bag lady from hell' as he called her. In this episode, I think both Joey and Mick shared equally in the comic relief, and I think they had fun with the age bantering.

I cracked up at the expression on Mick's face after kissing the bag lady, and again when he warns one of the bad guys who is about to run away towards the end of the episode when Mick tells him, 'I'll catch you'. There were some other improvements with Mick as well. Rick's portrayal of Mick seemed to be much more natural in this episode. His acting was pretty good, and the final close up of him with the pop can during the rock climbing scene was really a great shot! He looked like a natural coming down that rock, although I did squirm once or twice when his body would crash against the rock. I really liked his 'Everlast' outfit in the opening scene. What a refreshing change from the Hawaiian type shirts etc. His watch that he wore while driving the stunt car was pretty cool too. Finally, I loved seeing him with wet hair towards the end of the episode!!!

Writing wise, I will say that Gordon seems to know a lot about everything, despite the fact that Mick approached him for help and not visa versa. It was refreshing to see the writers give you a small tease of back story when they created this episode based on one of Mick's old friends and love of surfing. The downside of the writing made the brothers look forgetful. When they are exiting the office of the door they picked, they leave it open. I would think that would be a giveaway that someone was snooping in there. The other things that slightly bothered me was when they get the call that an autopsy could be preformed, and they leave a bunch of pop cans on the beach that they had been sorting through. And I thought it was common practice to always perform an autopsy so I wondered why one was not done automatically. (I could be very wrong about this though)

In conclusion, I really enjoy the acting and writing in the episode and I hope that they continue to be this good in future shows, if not better. - Kat Mendelin
This was a pretty good High Tide because of the various comical scenes and the whole stunt man thing that Mick was involved in. I liked seeing Mick play a stunt man…aka "Crash Simpson." And of course, I'm a bit partial to the episodes that feature Mick rather than Joey. Mick is seen driving a stunt car and rock climbing.

My absolute favorite part is when Joey and Mick are on the beach searching for Mr. Power Pop drink cans. The guys suspect that there is poison or a `knock-out' drug in some of the cans and they think that is how Malcolm (Mick's friend) may have died. They need to collect all the cans they can find and have them tested. Joey is embarrassed to death to be walking the beach picking up cans. He's afraid someone will see them and it'll ruin his reputation. There is an old woman (or as Joey called her, "the bag lady from hell!" LOL) who has some of the cans they need. Joey tries to sweet talk her out of them. She won't listen to Joey. She argues with him and refuses to give them up. But then up strolls the ever-sexy Mick Barrett. The woman's eyes light up. She calls him `handsome' (well, he IS) and tells him she will hand them over for a `price.' She asks Mick to give her a kiss "right here" and points to her cheek. I love the expressions on Mick's face here. He's smiling away, trying to be a good sport (and of course they NEED those cans, so he`s willing to do whatever to get them!). He looks like he's not too thrilled though. He licks his lips, smiling sweetly and moves in to kiss her cheek. She turns into him at the last second and he ends up planting one right on her lips! LOL She is practically blushing like a school-girl. I guess that made her day. It would've made my day too!

Another really cute scene was when Mick and Joey are on their knees at the beach sorting through drink cans. Fritz comes up in conversation and Joey says, "what does she see in you anyway?" Mick says, "I dunno. Why don't you ask her." Joey goes, "actually I did." Mick`s interest is peaked now…"You DID? What'd she say?" Joey won't tell him, saying he was sworn to secrecy. Along comes more `old' jokes towards Mick, saying he's `old and slow.` He takes off running and Mick chases him down---"tell me Joey!" He catches him and tackles him to the sand, punching Joey on the arm. I liked the playfulness of this scene.

I thought Joey was funny right before Mick scales down the cliff in that oh-so-uncomfortable-looking harness. Joey is making cracks about `if they wanted to off a stunt man, this would be the way to do it," and "you don't still have that thing about heights do ya?" Then to top it off he picks up Mick's rope and says, "a little slice-a-roni in the old line and splat." LOL That is just a classic, adorable Rick smile when he gets half-way down the cliff and pops open the can, takes a drink and smiles for the camera, eyebrows raised. Too cute!

Mick's buddy Malcolm has supposedly drowned and the guys need to get to the bottom of it. Joey makes some cracks about how Malcolm WAS old after all and that he may have really drowned as it appeared. Mick says that Malcolm was HIS age, not old. I can't help but laugh at how Joey is always making jokes to Mick about his age!

I thought there was some weird, but funny humor in the scene when the guys go to where the autopsy's are performed. The doctor is walking the halls with them, talking about cremation and autopsies while munching a sandwich and complaining about mayo being on it. Joey is holding his stomach as if he's about to puke. I too cannot imagine eating in a place like that, but I guess the doctors are no longer sensitive to that type of thing.

Despite the really noisy shirt Mick has on in the `snooping-the-office-for-evidence' scene, Mick looked great. I guess the buttons on that shirt didn't work! No complaints here! I've noticed in High Tide that many of Mick's shirts are not buttoned up. David Hasselhoff…eat your heart out! David had NOTHING on Rick Springfield. I have heard High Tide compared to Baywatch, but in my book…there is no comparison between the two shows. (and certainly no comparing Rick and David. Rick is a much better actor than David, and definitely nicer to watch).

Mick continues to argue with Malcolm's wife and ponder what really happened to Malcolm. She is a very bitter woman at this point. Joey makes little cracks throughout the show like he thinks the woman is `hot on him.' Like I've said before…Joey is a legend in his own mind!

Mick is strapped into the stunt car which he's supposed to drive up onto a ramp. Joey gets a call from Gordon that all the cans have traces of poison in them and tells Joey it wouldn't be a good idea if Mr. Power Pop knows that the guys are `onto them.' Mick is revving the engine on the car, which looks like an old classic Chevy of some kind, looking through the windshield `cage' right before he takes off. I LOVE this part where they show Mick's beautiful green eyes up close. *sigh* The car shoots over the ramp and into the ocean. The onlookers and the viewer assume Mick is still in the car, but of course he's not. He knows the car has been tampered with and he jumped out of the car before it even hit the ramp. Way to go Mick! What a smart detective he is! Turns out the director (Darrell) had rigged the doors to stay locked. Mick and Joey scuffle with Darrell and the `prop guy.' Joey warns the prop guy to watch out for Mick, that "he's pretty fast for an old guy." LOL The criminals/murders' are caught once again by the Barrett brothers!

The ending scene has yet another `old' joke. Mick is sore and Joey says, "what's the matter? Aches and pains getting to ya in your old age?" For some viewers the age jokes may grow old, but I get a laugh out of them every time one comes up. - Kelley Pearson
