This episode was pretty interesting in the fact that Joey and Mick are going up `against' each other, as Joey feels he can fight crime without Mick and that he can stand on his own. I guess he wants to prove he can be his own man, apart from his brother. The idea was pretty realistic in the fact that most siblings DO have their moments with each other when they just cannot get along, or they feel the need to compete. Nothing is perfect all the time, especially with people who are around each other constantly. I thought it made for a good story…showing the "other" side of their brotherly relationship. In real life though…how many brothers ARE this close? Do they really spend this much time together? I have no siblings, so I wouldn't know.

I noticed that Mick had several wardrobe changes in this one. In the beginning he's wearing a purple button up shirt and a nice pair of blue jeans. This is during the opening scene where the guys are chasing a `bad guy' that neither of them could catch. It ended with a blow-up from Joey about how he basically doesn't NEED any help from Mick. He can fight crime on his own…without Mick interfering. We see them walking separate from each other, with Mick limping off a half a block behind Joey. Awww…Mick looked as though he could use some chicken soup, a nice soothing leg rub and a heating pad! :-P

Another wardrobe change…or is it a lack of wardrobe? A sweet shirtless scene comes next! (And with Mick sporting purple shorts. Huh? He must've been on a purple kick around this time. LOL!) I absolutely LOVED the age jokes Joey kept throwing at Mick. That's one of my favorite funny things in this whole series. And it's comical how Mick is supposed to be 30-something on High Tide, when in fact Rick was in his 40's then. As youthful as that man is…it could be believable if you didn`t know any better. Joey makes age cracks because Mick is in the sun and Mick gets that stubborn look on his face, which is just adorable! He tells Mick, "You're past your prime. (in the part where Mick says Joey's in his sun). I like how Mick says with an almost-cocky, disbelieving head movement, "I'm not PAST my prime!" They're bantering back and forth was hilarious to me. And it's always nice to see Rick lying back shirtless catching a ray too! (or would that be "Mick." Okay…it's nice to see `either of them' sunbathing shirtless!) The little 'peeking' side glances Mick gives Joey are quite funny. I thought it was cute how Mick is looking up at the rays and realizing Joey might be right. So he reluctantly throws on a ball cap. LOL.
The other sunbathing scene shortly after this one is cute too. This time Mick and Annie are sunning outside the shop when Joey arrives. They argue again because Mick learns that Joey went to the station to investigate the murder of one of his pals Billy Barnes. Annie says, "Will you two just kiss and make up?!" Joey finds Mick's sunscreen lying on the arm of the chair. He grabs it up and reads the tube---"Helps reduce the affects of AGING?!" In the next scene we see Mick and a female detective friend of his chatting across a table, and she's telling Mick that Joey needs to be kept away from this one. Can I just say…ANOTHER nice shirt color on Mick here! The color is like a mix between burgundy and purple, which is perfect with his hair and complexion. He looks just heavenly in this short little scene!

Apparently Mick couldn't make up his mind on colors for this show, because then in another scene at the beach, a bright blue T-shirt is looking `sweet' on him. I've always thought Rick looks amazing in blue! More old cracks…some arguing again between the brothers as Mick tells him to drop this case he's trying to crack, and they part in frustration once again. This show has Denise Richards (now a well-known Hollywood actress) as one of the characters. She plays Alex, a girl who attracts the interests of Joey. Don't ALL the girls get his interest up?! Every time I see Denise I think of her as the girl from Wild Things, my favorite Matt Dillon movie. :-P Of course…the girl is trouble for Joey. She's tangled up with the drug running criminals who killed Billy Barnes.

Joey manages a dinner date with Alex. While Joey is wining and dining her and showing off throughout the dinner, totally acting like someone he`s not, Alex slyly picks him for information. Joey's mouth won't quit! Meanwhile Mick is snooping around and comes across a murder scene. Someone whacks him over the head, leaving him to wake up by the body with a gun in hand. Lovely. Mick says to himself when he hears the sirens, "Oh this looks very bad."
This next scene has got to be one of my all-time favorite High Tide scenes to date!!! We see Mick in handcuffs behind his back, sitting on the bench in the police station. In comes Joey, taunting Mick with that "I-told-you-so" expression on his face. He makes it quite clear that he has the upper hand now. LOL! He's chuckling away at first but then quickly tries to be serious. Mick looks like a `whipped pup' here to me. Haha! Too funny! Joey: "I hear they're going for the death penalty." Mick looking up again like a pup: "Are you having fun?" Joey: "I'll send you some cigarettes." Mick: "I don't smoke." Joey: "Well you're gonna need `em to trade with your fellow cons. There's stuff you're gonna want. A tattoo, concealed weapon, a wedding dress. Actually, I hear it`s not so bad…you get free country and western concerts and there`s a nice set of barbells at your disposal." LOL! Mick: (with a glaring look up at Joey)---"You better hope they give me the death penalty." Joey: (he says something here I can't make out and then says…) "See, everything they say about the justice system is true (finger pointing & in a preaching tone). You people don't get rehabilitated. You just get MORE violent once you're inside." Mick tries to get a hold of Joey but he can't because he's cuffed. He shouts, "I'm NOT VIOLENT." The female detective comes in and hears his angry outburst---"You could've fooled me."
The cop ends up turning Mick loose, but threatens that they both need to drop this case, and that Mick is out of favors. But of course we all know they can't leave it alone! The next scene shows the guys spying on some boatmen and what appears to be suspicious activity…drug running. And we have Mick in yet another shirt….a purple-ish blue, long-sleeved T-shirt, tan pants and sneakers. The guys watch on as the men unload drugs right under everyone's noses. Joey then blurts out that this is HIS lead, and what is Mick doing here anyway. Joey makes his way to the dock to get a closer look, while Mick watches on from a distance. Alex comes walking along the dock and Joey grabs her and pulls her over to him. Seconds later, the `bad guys' find them and take them into the boat. Joey mentions his friend Billy Barnes who supposedly fell out of the boat and "drowned." He tells the guy (Victor, the leader of the pack) that he knows he killed Billy. In the next moment, the man hands Alex the gun and makes her point it at Joey. Privately Alex comes to Joey's defense, telling Victor that Joey is harmless, that she got Victor the info he needed and that he should just let him go. He punches her, knocking her off her feet. He gets her up and leads her to the room where Joey is being held. Alex tells Joey that she's never had a choice in any of this, that by the time she realized what Victor was like, it was too late…she was already involved with him. She tells Joey that she's tried to leave Victor, but that he abused her. She shows Joey a cigarette burn on her shoulder. It's obvious at this point that Victor kept her in fear of him so she would stay.

Meanwhile Mick has made his way onto the boat & is snooping around. He ends up sneaking into the room where Joey and Alex are and Joey accidentally punches Mick. He falls to the floor! And then in a moment like this, as Mick is holding his sore jaw, Joey begins the quarreling again about how Mick should've stayed out of this, that he had it under control. Mick cannot believe his brother is still arguing over who is better at solving crime! LOL! Joey slips out and goes to the control room of the boat. He pushes buttons and creates a distraction. Mick tells Alex to take off running & not look back, and she does. Victor appears and Mick jumps him up on the deck, taking him down. A fight ensues between the two & then Joey gets in on it, fighting off Victor's thugs who are suddenly coming out of the woodworks. The guys `win' again. They hang Victor over the edge of the boat in a harness, bound up and ready to be taken into custody. Suddenly we see a bunch of cops running down the dock. Mick says, "You called for back up?" Joey says with a proud smile, "I bet you didn't see that one coming!"

The ending scene shows the brothers and Alex at the police station, with Mick basically telling her that her confession will make a big difference. She thanks the guys, kisses Mick on the cheek (and wow, what nice dimple shots of Mick here! ), then kisses Joey on the lips, smiling and telling him, "And thanks to you…little brother." As the guys are leaving the station Mick tells Joey, "I think she kinda likes me." Joey: "Aw, come on. You're old enough to be her father!" Mick: "I'm not old enough to be her father." {Here we have yet another outfit change for Mick. He's wearing a deep turquoise, long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and tan BOOTS! Boots?? The type of boots you might see on someone who is planning to trek through the snow. The tall type that go about half way up his shin. O-kay. They don't look BAD on him, no. But a bit out of place on a surfer in the California sunshine.} The guys fuss back and forth about who she likes better, when Joey finally says, "Yea, I guess two heads are better than one." Suddenly Joey looks across the street and spots the guy from the beginning who got away from he and Mick. The man sees Joey looking at him and he dashes off down the street. The guys quickly try to create a plan of action to catch him, but Joey takes off after the man before Mick can get his thoughts out. Mick lets out an exasperated "JOEY!" and also takes off. Mick is seen running away from the camera, sprinting down the sidewalk (always a `good thing!' I love to see him coming, but I love to watch him go too! LOL ) Mick's narration during this scene is nice. He realizes that he is often a bit too cautious, and that Joey sometimes won't look before he leaps, but he knows this is probably why they work so well together.

I really liked this episode. I like how he and Joey were butting heads, but then in the end they discover how deep their brotherly love goes. Despite the 'competition' that often comes up, I think they figured out they wouldn't want life without each other. They make an awesome crime-fighting team! Sweet! - Kelley Pearson
