"Mermaid" is another of the High Tide shows that I would consider a `Joey episode,' even though Mick is a big part of the story. The show starts out with what appears to be a costume party on a cruise ship. There are men on the boat who are selling weapons and one unlucky woman from the party happens to walk into their room by mistake and sees the guns. She says that she won't tell anyone what she saw, but later the man finds her in the hall and stabs her, assuring her silence. Meanwhile a girl dressed as a mermaid is passing by and witnesses the stabbing. The man chases her and she jumps overboard, dropping her purse on the deck. The `bad guy' finds it and picks it up… The next day, after a surf with his brother, Joey spots the 'mermaid' lying against some rocks, washed up on shore. And might I add a mention (as I often do!) that the black wetsuit with the blue lettering is quite `complimentary' on Rick/Mick??! The guys check her over (with a cute comment from Joey that they're gonna need a "wheelbarrow full of tarter sauce") and haul her to the hospital. It's discovered she has a pretty bad head injury and cannot remember her name or much of anything else at this point. The only thing they have to `go on' is a room key and the mermaid suit. The guys decide to call the police and try to get some help for `mermaid girl.' They arrive at the shop to find Annie filing her nails, obviously bored due to lack of customers. Mick informs Annie that the 'mermaid' is drawing a "complete blank." Joey gets this dreamy look in his eyes and tells Annie, "I think I'm in love." (to which Mick kinda blows out the side of his mouth as if to say, "whatever" or "yeah right!") Annie tells them she's been spreading this great romantic story around, the one about Joey rescuing a beautiful mermaid who was washed up on the beach. Mick tells her to keep it under wraps. I find it funny and cute how Joey falls for every sweet, pretty face he sees. (or every hot body he sees!) It doesn't take much for Joey Barrett to become love-struck! Mick, on the other hand, seems to be a bit choosier. There are many High Tide episodes in which Mick is struck by cupid, but I believe his little bro has him outnumbered! Mick definitely has the more `cautious' personality of the two when it comes to love & relationships. I liked Mick's line when Joey tells him that it IS a great story, him rescuing the `mermaid.' Joey replies, "Think about it though. A beautiful woman, no memory." Mick comes back with an adorable teasing grin, "Sounds like the girl you took to the prom." LOL! Mick makes fish jokes while Joey frets about the `mermaid.' Whoa! We have a following scene with Mick kicked back holding a guitar!!!! (getting ready to practice a few riffs there Mick?) Nice! Hey, so not only does Mick solve crime, fight like a master, and surf…he also plays guitar! The female police detective is there talking to the `gang.' "Well boys, I thought I'd heard it all, but this is one whale of a tale." Joey twists his head in aggravation---"Don't YOU start." She tells them she is going to circulate the girls' picture in the media and see if anything comes up. She and Mick make more fish jokes. Mick: "If that doesn't work, you could always put her photo on a can of tuna." Joey doesn't find this funny. The detective: "Oh relax Joey, you're off the hook." Annie who is sunbathing & listening in says, "Hey Mick, can I have the rest of the day off?" Mick with a sarcastically questioning look asks, "As opposed to what?!" She whispers, "Just asking…" |

| The gun running `bad guys' find the girls' picture in the local paper with the headline---"Have you seen this woman?" and they begin to get uptight. Meanwhile, Joey is hanging at the hospital taking care of the "mermaid." They play a name game in which Joey lists off female names, hoping she will remember her name. Joey tells her, "I'd ask you out, but I wouldn't know who I was asking." She leans in and kisses him on the cheek. She tells him, "Maybe it'll come to me in my dreams," and Joey replies with a sweet smile, "then we'll both be dreaming about you."
Awww! Just outside the room, Mick is decked in a blue denim shirt and black jeans. He's lounging back reading a newspaper while he waits. Ok, I just gotta say…this was purely `classic' for the directors/writers of High Tide to throw in a bit of Rick-history in this scene! The hospital call speaker comes on and says, "Dr. Drake, Dr. Noah Drake…please call liposuction." LOL! Now that caught me totally off guard. I guess Rick cannot escape his past acting gigs (especially his role of the handsome doc) no matter where he goes! I don't know if the Dr. Drake thing has ever been referenced in any of Rick's other acting roles since his days at GH in the 80's. If so, I haven't caught it. I thought it was a hoot how Mick hears the speaker and looks up from his paper, glancing around suspiciously, then shakes his head a bit, as if to shake it off…like a man caught in a weird moment of déjà vu. Definitely a laugh out loud moment in this one! Then to top it all off, Joey comes out and Mick jumps up and slaps down the paper, exclaiming to Joey, "Oh man at last. Let's get out of here. Hospitals give me the willies." Joey: "The willies?" Mick: "I dunno, not as bad as the heebie jeebies, worse than the creeps." That was really cute. Almost like a jab or either a complete opposite turn in his feelings about hospitals…the opinion between Mick and Noah that is. :-P Joey bums money from Mick to buy the girl some flowers at the gift shop. Mick tells him to make it fast and sits down once again with his newspaper. He doesn't see the suspicious looking guy in scrubs who enters the `mermaid's' room. She is sleeping fitfully, memories of the night on the ship coming back to her in her sleep. The man sneaks in and tries to suffocate her with a pillow. Joey enters the dark room, flowers in hand and the guy runs. Mick and Joey take chase after him, but they lose him at the stairwell. The guys head to the station and plead with the detective to set up some protective custody for the girl. They start to agree upon a `safe house,' when Joey says, "Guys…I know the safest house." So back at the brothers' apartment, they begin tossing around ideas and clues with the girl. From the room key tag, she remembers the possible name of the motel she had stayed in. {So this must've been a dinner cruise?---one of those where you go out for a few hours and then back to your motel}. The next morning they go on a motel hunt and actually do find the room. They find her suitcase and a few of her things, except they find handcuffs and a whip…which she finds, "weird." Mick discovers there are way too many clothes in the closet for one person for one night, so they go to the front desk to investigate the occupants of that room. The clerk looks it all up on her computer and calls her Miss Ross…"Miss Marjorie Ross." Next scene…back at High Tide, the girl is looking at a picture she'd found in her suitcase. In the background, Mick sees a cruise ship name and takes off to check it out. Joey and "mermaid" flirt and goof around on the beach when suddenly she has a `flashback' from the night she jumped ship. She realizes that since she has no past memory, that Joey is her oldest friend in the world. Later Mick questions Joey that he may be getting too close. Joey tells him that it may sound `strange' but he thinks she may be `the one,' and that he feels a connection with her. Mick gives him an "I've-heard-this-all-before" expression and lists all the reasons why he understands that Joey could fall for this girl. But he tells Joey that she's in a very vulnerable position, and for him to be careful. Joey assures him that he knows what he's doing. They're interrupted by a visit from the detective (we have a name! ---"Sam"), who comes bearing bad news. The other girl's body is found dead under the pier, and it turns out HER name is Marjorie Ross. "Mermaid" is left wondering who the hell SHE is, if she's not Margie. Sam wonders if the girl might be in connection with Margie and the call girl business. Ok…so this explains the whips, cuffs and sexy lingerie back at the motel! They have a little black book of numbers found with Margie, so Mick is off to investigate. Damn, Mick looks awesome in blue! He enters a bar wearing blue jeans, a blue T-shirt and a blue denim shirt unbuttoned down. He bluffs the guy at the bar telling him Margie cannot make it today. The guy is upset, saying it's the second time she's done this. Mick picks him for info about the party on the "High Spirits" cruise the other night and asks how he might join a party on that ship. The guy lets him know right away that you have to know Mr. Bender in order to be at such a celebration, and that if he's having to ASK where Mr. Bender is…then he doesn't need to know. He leaves abruptly, but a guy stops him by the door wanting to know what the guy (Mick) wanted. He tells him he doesn't know, but that he was looking for Mr. Bender. |

| The dude from by the door (Sanchez) goes to Bender and lets him know that a surfer from High Tide is snooping around asking questions. Bender loads his gun, planning to go after Mick. Back on the couch at High Tide, Joey and `the girl' share a kiss. Joey stops himself with only a kiss, getting up from the sofa. She fears that Joey is holding back because of the possibility that she may be a hooker. He talks about how they're finding each other could be fate and that he likes her anyway. Someone comes tapping at the door calling himself Kurt Mathis. He says he's looking for his wife. "Mermaid" sees him and says his face is so familiar to her, that she knows this guy. (Um, well yes…you DO. He's Bender, the man you saw stabbing the hooker!) She's excited because she thinks he's a face from her past. He hands them the girls' drivers license, attempting to prove that he's her `husband.' Of course it IS her ID, (he stole it from her purse the night she jumped off the ship) but he loads them up with a story about how she has a drinking problem and they'd had a fight and she left in a hurry without her purse. Wow, did she fall for this one or what??? She thanks Joey for all he's done, he tells her "fairy tales aren't real," and she says they should be friends and keep in touch. She kisses him sweetly on the lips and leaves unknowingly with the murderer. Wow. Dumb, dumb, dumb! Joey is drinking liquor and nursing his broken heart when Mick finds him. He claims that she was in fact a hooker according to the records Sam dug up on her. When Mick asks where she's at, Joey tells him, "her husband TOOK her," and goes into the whole ugly story. As the `story' unfolds, Mick gives him a weird look and Joey says, "Oh. Ohhh…I did a bad thing." Mick rashes Joey out over not seeing what was right before his eyes. He tells Mick that the guy was very convincing. (Truth be it, he was so love struck, he just couldn't see anything but her! Or would that be…her leaving him. ) The guys go back to the bar where Mick was earlier. They pin the guy who had been waiting for Margie and ask him where Bender is. He won't give up the info until they tell him he could be charged for soliciting prostitution AND be an accessory to murder. He says he really doesn't know where Bender is, and to ask Sanchez. They take him along for a ride and have him point out Sanchez. Now that they`ve found Sanchez, the guy hops out of the car, fearing his own fate. He wants no further involvement with this Bender guy. Mick, who's looking quite awesome driving his blue convertible Mustang with his hair blowing in the wind, follows Sanchez and pulls up to the gated house he split off to. Inside, out by the pool, Sanchez chats with Bender. Bender tells him that the girl still believes she's his wife and that she "loves the house." He says they need to find out who all she's talked to, what she knows, and then they will `lose' her. Bender approaches the woman just after she's finished showering. He picks her for what she remembers. |

Outside, Mick and Joey have scaled up the security fence and are inside the property. They slip around looking for a good way in. Bender's thugs are attacked by the brothers, giving the guys a free chance to run for the house. One of the dudes gets up and chases after them. Mick and Joey hide around a corner and trip him up once again.
Ahhh! Mick goes into a WICKED kick and spin move and the man flails into the pool. "Elaine Mathis" realizes what the man is up to and whacks him over the head with the lamp---"You killed my friend, you bastard!" She tries to escape, but Bender and his man catch her. She screams "JOEY!" The brothers hear her cries, but continue to fight off the `goons,' also taking down Sanchez. Once inside they see that Bender has a knife to the girl's throat. He threatens to cut her if the `surfer boy' doesn't get out of his way. He plans to load her in the car and escape. Joey slips up the stairs catching Bender off guard and trips him. He falls and rolls all the way to the bottom and Joey grabs the girl. She tells him that now she has remembered everything. (Ok, so exactly WHEN did these memories come to her? Why couldn't she have thought of all this before leaving Joey to go with Bender, her so-called husband?! It would've saved them all a lot of grief. But then hey, we wouldn't have those scenes of Mick kicking ass at the mansion, now would we?) Joey hugs and comforts her telling her she's safe now. Mick, who is smiling from the bottom of the stairs just HAD to throw in one more fish joke---"Nice catch." :-P In the final scene we have Elaine watching the sunset at High Tide. The guys run out (Mick in a revealing purple tank top! Not quite my favorite style of `tank top` on a man, but revealing nonetheless! haha) and Mick tells her, "Cheer up Elaine. He's never gonna bother you again. They got him on everything from murder, to prostitution, to arms dealing. I think they even found a couple of overdue library books." Mick says he will leave them to be alone now, that Annie is downstairs by herself and he wouldn't want her to have to do any 'actual work.' Elaine thanks Joey for caring enough about her to help her out and for giving her a second chance. She tells Joey she plans to go home, get counseling, get a real job and get a real life. He wants to know what the future holds for them. He tells her it's okay that she was a call-girl, that he didn't know her as one. She assures Joey that as soon as she knows who the `real' Elaine Mathis is, that he'll be the first one to know. Elaine and Joey share a sweet kiss, and she leaves. Mick comes back and tells Joey he fell for her `hook, line and sinker.` Then to add insult to injury---"Shake it off. There are other fish in the sea." LOL! Joey tells him, "Come on, you're killing me Mick." Mick: "I know a great girl, and she should take your mind off Elaine. She's famous too…Shamoo!" Joey chases Mick to the shore, and we have Mick narrating. I like what he said here: that sometimes fairy tales DO come true. Elaine has went to find herself and Joey was left with the biggest fish tale of them all….the one who got away. I thought this was a pretty good tale/tail as well…Kelley Pearson |
